The Catch
Inshore fishing in the waters around the U.S. Virgin Islands often produce Kingfish, Barracuda, Bonito (Little Tunny), Hardnose (Blue Runner), Rainbow Runners and Jacks.
Your catch while offshore fishing might include Wahoo, Dolphin Fish (Mahi-Mahi), Sailfish, White Marlin, Blue Marlin, Blackfin Tuna and Yellowfin Tuna.
Some species are here year-round like Bar and Crevelle Jacks, Barracuda and Cero. Some are year-round but have peak seasons and others are seasonal, so you need to know what's biting and when so you know what to expect when you go out fishing.
September and October the Yellowfin Tuna are usually biting and some bull Dolphin Fish (Mahi-Mahi).
November through March there is lots of Wahoo and also Yellowfin Tuna, Sailfish, Blackfin Tuna and some Dolphin Fish (Mahi-Mahi). This is a mixed bag season, pretty much guaranteed to catch something during this time of year.
April and May is Dolphin Fish (Mahi-Mahi) season. White Marlin also peak in these two months. Hardnose (Bluerunner) and Rainbow Runner are out in these months and through the summer.
In the summertime from June through September, the Atlantic Blue Marlin bite is the best you will find anywhere in the world. (How big is the Marlin season? Well, one of the world’s most prestigious fishing tournaments, the USVI Open/Atlantic Blue Marlin Tournament happens on St. Thomas annually in August.) Billfish are catch and release.
